Tip 1: Less is more

The INALTO troughs provide plenty of space, but especially at the start of the garden and balcony season it’s easy to be tempted to put the still very delicate young plants close together. They are still very small and it looks quite bare in the first few months. What you need now is patience.

It is important when planting to know the size of the fully grown vegetables, herbs and flowers. Planting them too close together is unfortunately not productive, as the plants will not develop well in the long term and strive against each other.

Tip 2: Things need to fit together

Only plant those plants together that have similar requirements when it comes to nutrients, water and light. To take an example: Only combine Mediterranean herbs such as lavender, sage and thyme, do not mix these with kitchen herbs such as parsley and chives. The first like poor, dry soil, the others like a lot more water and a bit of a feed throughout the year.

Tip 3: Choose the perfect compost

There is a wide range of different composts on offer in the garden centre. Not all of them are necessary to get a lavish harvest. A rich organic universal compost and a herb compost will get you through the garden year in style. Universal or vegetable compost can also be used for flowering plants.

Tip 4: Small vegetables are the next big thing

There are now fantastic varieties which have been specially developed for vertical
beds such as the INALTO. Bush tomatoes, for example, will remain small and compact
and yet still set a lot of fruit. They won’t need side shoot removal and need no support rods, as they only grow to a height of between 30-70 cm. There are also small varieties of peppers.

Tip 5: Get in the corners

The corners of the individual INALTO Troughs are ideal for hanging plants such as nasturtiums, wild tomatoes such as currant tomatoes or trailing strawberries. The top two boxes are excellent choices, offering the plants plenty of space to extend downwards.

Tip 6: Don’t forget to feed

By mid-June at the latest, you should start feeding vegetables. Especially plants with a high nutrient requirement such as tomatoes, chillies or small paprika need additional feed throughout the summer in order to set plenty of fruit. Take care: not all fertilisers can be used with galvanised steel. Sulphur in fertilisers, for example, will have a chemical reaction with the steel.

Tip 7: Let variety rule

What about planting a whole trough with basil?! There is such a wide range available:
lemon basil, Greek bush basil, African Blue, Thai basil, and so much more. It’s so much fun to plant fresh herbs and enjoy the wide variety of flavours! Visually herbs can be quite impressive too. There are variegated sages, such as for example Tricolor or pale green golden sage.

Recommended filling

1. Drainage
Expanded clay, pottery shards or gravel and similar substances prevent stagnant wet if
used as a bottom laye

2. Nutrition layer

As a second layer, grass cuttings, chopped leaf mould or compost should follow, to provide the bed with nourishment

3. Planting layer

This should be topped off with a layer of garden or flower compost

In order to grow vegetables in semishade / shade successfully, it is important to put them in the brightest spot on the balcony and not banish them into the darkest corner. If the balcony or patio is almost completely in the shade, it will be rather difficult to grow edible plants.

It also depends on the surroundings of the balcony: if it is in a warm, protected location
in the inner city, you can cultivate the occasional vegetable. It’s important not to become discouraged!

What you should avoid

It is best not to add mint to a trough or plant container. It has a tendency to extreme spread and to grab all space and nourishment for itself.
